Artist Statement

Laura “Lars” Sladich is a costume technologist from Bakersfield, California. They currently specialize in mascot making, also known as, “fursuit making” for individuals who are a part of the Furry Fandom. They have been sewing for 15 years where they have helped design, construct, and tailor costumes for their local dance company, church, and clothing line.

This work was made with sewing machines, fabrics, couch cushion foam, ski masks, hot glue, duck tape, store-bought pattern templates, and handmade pattern templates. This artwork fits in with Lars’ overall body of work by how there is a sense of anonymity outside of race, gender, or sex. There is no judgment, discouragement, or fear. There is only happiness, creativity, and wholeness with one’s self.
